By Ira Levin, author of Rosemary's Baby, The Stepford Wives and The Boys From Brazil.

Deathtrap is a thriller in two-acts, with dark comic undertones. Deathtrap centers around a once successful playwright, now experiencing writer's block, his loving and loyal wife, and a graduate student who has written a surefire hit. Twists and turns abound in this clever and funny Broadway hit, a 1978 Tony nominee for Best Play.

Sidney Bruhl - Age 45-65: Polished and dashing.
Thinks he is the smartest man in the room and wants everyone to know it. Clever to a fault and able to turn from charming to sinister in the blink of an eye. He is on stage even when at home, always playing the part of the doting husband and talented author. Physical role, with two realistic fight scenes critical to the plot.
Myra Bruhl - Age 35-55: Sophisticated, upper class (most likely from old money).
Has some physical ailments that become more clear as the play moves forward. Adores her husband and does her best to support him, even when she disagrees with him. Sweet, caring, emotional and nervous all at once, she also has a backbone when circumstances call for it. Somewhat physical role. Must be comfortable with helping to carry a body outside and must die believably on stage.
Clifford Anderson - Age 22-30: College grad student. Handsome, confident, physically fit.
Knows he is the smartest man in the room and is willing to bide his time before displaying it. He controls his relationship with Sidney and must be believable both as the charming naive student and later as he shows his true and sociopathic colors. Physical role, with two realistic fight scenes critical to the plot.
Helga Ten Dorp - Age 40+: Wild, individual, mysterious at times (even when wearing a rain poncho).
Minor celebrity known for her psychic ability (and now trying to cash in on it). She relishes showing off her "gift" with flourish. May have an accent (Dutch), is disarming and even brave when faced with pain and violence. Moderately physical role, with small skirmish at the close of the play.
Porter Grimshaw - Age 40+: Attorney.
Longtime professional and personal friend of Sidney. Solid and observant. A suit and tie type of guy. Moderately physical role, with small skirmish at the close of the play.
